Who doesn’t love a good mockumentary? Whether it’s Spinal Tap, Best in Show, Cloverfield, or something very dark like Man Bites Dog, there are plenty of opportunities for great moments in this unique genre. The trailer for the Norwegian mockumentary Troll Hunter makes it look like it’s more in line with the last two films mentioned, taking a more horror-oriented path than something that one would expect from someone like Christopher Guest. Even with that said, this trailer actually makes the film look kind of funny (if that is intentional or not I can’t really tell). You can watch it below, courtesy of Twitch (via FirstShowing).
The plot description says that Troll Hunter is about the government of Norway hiding the fact that trolls have been living on game preserves, and the documentary crew of the film is out to prove their existence. Personally, I think this movie looks pretty terrific, and some have said that the humor is intentional, so any worries I may have had about moments seeming bizarre aren’t real concerns. Some things do seem to have been lost in translation, with certain subtitles (“Do not imagine you’ll be allowed to keep that tape!”) and title cards (“A documentary so revealing…so profound…that it changes your concept of society!”) not really sounding right. But, hey, maybe this is all part of the film’s intentional humor. Either way, I’m pretty excited.
