American Reunion is hitting theaters next year, and if you’ve been paying attention to all of the promotional material thus far you’ve probably noticed how hard Universal is trying to convince the masses that we’ve missed Jim and the gang and that they are one of the most iconic franchises in the history of the universe. In an effort to continue this trend, the studio debuted the new poster for the upcoming sequel on MTV‘s site (images courtesy of Movies.com), to appeal to the youth demographic (most of whom probably haven’t seen the original trilogy or don’t hold it in a particular high regard). The interesting thing about this? It’s a mirror image of the 1999 original’s poster except 11 years later. Because, you know, that’s clever. Check it out below, followed by the original.

 

Does anyone else get sort of sad looking at this? I’m not talking about their age or anything; people get older and physical features (and hair) change. But there’s just something…off in their eyes. Almost like defeat or resignation, like they didn’t exactly want to come back but realized that they lacked a good excuse not to. Plus, bills have to be paid. This is not a remark on the quality of American Reunion since I haven’t seen it (and the trailers make it look at the very least “alright”), but…just look at them. I want to buy them some ice cream and watch Sleepless in Seattle with them until they cheer up.
