Despite no U.S. release date in sight for last year’s Laurent Cantet-directed upstate New York period drama Foxfire, we’ve got news on what The Class helmer is up to next. Coming out of Cannes, Variety reports that the director will be returning to Cuba for his next feature.
While contributing to the omnibus feature 7 Days in Havana, Cantet reportedly kicked things off with Cuba’s celebrated novelist Leonardo Padura and now they are teaming for a project called Itaca. Set for an on-location shoot in Havana, the film is entirely in the Spanish language and has a small scope, set simply on a rooftop terrace.
We track Amadeo, who returns to the city following a 16-year exile and over one night he sits with his childhood friends as they “retrace their lives, gradually revealing their doubts, secrets and broken dreams.” With casting underway (don’t expect any big names, as he’ll be using Cuban actors), production begins later this year for a likely 2014 bow.
