With some festival titles never hitting theaters in the year they first screen, or perhaps ever, it’s always a surprise when we get news that we’ll actually see one sooner than expected. Such is the case with Ryan Coogler‘s Fruitvale, a top prize winner at Sundance Film Festival. Initially scheduled for an October bow by The Weinstein Company, the film is now getting out of the crowded Oscar  season and will land on July 26th, per the official Twitter account. Led by Michael B. Jordanwe called it “a telling and touching movie, serving as a pertinent social and cultural reminder not to forget the life and times of Oscar Grant,” a man who was gunned down by a police officer on New Year’s Day 2009 in Oakland.

In other Sundance-related news, we’ve got the first poster and featurette for Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ directorial debut The Kings of Summer. Set to debut on May 31st, the one-sheet is a perfectly fitting look at our trio having fun in the woods. One can read my review, where I remarked how loved the cinematography, “filled with compelling imagery and kinetic editing,” but for a “film clearly attempting to hit the funnybone, the script only comes off amusing and doesn’t often hit a comedic stride.” Still worth checking out, see the poster (via the director) and featurette (full of new footage, via Buzzfeed) below for the film starring Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Arias, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Alison Brie and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

Are you looking forward to both of these Sundance films?
