In the land where franchises rule, it’s no surprise that we learn about sequels before some films even hit theaters. Such is the case tonight, as news has arrived that Warner Bros. is fast-tracking a sequel to this weekend’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. According to Deadline, Zack Snyder will be back as director, along with screenwriter David S. Goyer, who is also scripting Justice League. There’s no specific timetable yet, but the better Man of Steel does at the box office, the faster we’ll see this one, and we can also expect Christoper Nolan to return as producer, but perhaps in a smaller role.

Moving to another confirmed sequel, but one that’s following a certified hit, Universal Pictures have confirmed that producer Jason Blum is actively working on a follow-up to The Purge. Led by Ethan Hawke, the horror film that cost just $3 million went on to gross over $35 million this past weekend. There’s no telling yet if writer/director James DeMonaco will be back, but as fans of the film, the possibilities of where they could take the concept of a 12-hour crime spree are endless, and if means more Hawke in the spotlight, we’re all for it.

Lastly in sequel news, we’ve got word of a project that has hit a roadblack. There’s been many rumors regarding Bobby and Peter Farrelly‘s sequel to their hit comedy Dumb and Dumber and although it looked like it may have been moving forward, Warner Bros. has decided to pull out, according to The Wrap. The reason is due to their disappointing grosses on the Jim Carrey-led magician movie The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, not even making its budget back at the domestic box office.

While we could easily shift that blame on the bland marketing more than anything else, WB has decided not to green light the $30 million budget for Dumb and Dumber To and is letting other studios grab it. Deadline reports that one interested party is The Wolf Of Wall Street producers Red Granite, with Universal potentially distributing domestically, but nothing has been signed yet.

As for Carrey’s next project, an action comedy coming from Napoleon Dynamite‘s Jared Hess, he’s found a co-star. Previously titled Loomis Fargo, Deadline now reports that Owen Wilson has come aboard the film that follows and armored car driver who wants to get even after a bank heist goes wrong. With production aiming for this summer, check back for updates.

Do you want to see Snyder direct Man of Steel 2? Did you see The Purge? What do you think about Carrey’s box office prospects?
