These two just can’t seem to quit each other. Vulture is telling us that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will be collaborating once again, this time on The Wolf of Wall Street. While we thought that Ridley Scott was going to adapt Jordan Belfort‘s 1990 novel of the same name with DiCaprio in tow, it now seems like only the actor is sticking around. Terrence Winter‘s screenplay; however, is still being used, which isn’t a surprise when you consider him and Scorsese worked on Boardwalk Empire together. Oddly enough, Scorsese was once ready to take on the book, but the whole thing kind of fell through. And now, through some means (magic?), he’s back on the project.
Alright, those means aren’t exactly magic; instead, Scott left the project, and the now independent film is no longer at Warner Bros. DiCaprio secured independent financing for the film, and it looks like it could shoot by June. The book follows a corrupt brokerage firm operator, who goes from a rich powerful executive to a federal convict. It sounds like the kind of material the two would work on together, and should be as great as we would expect from the team. I wouldn’t mind to see it, for the most part.
That other part which isn’t very enthusiastic about the news is the part that still wants to see The Irishman. You know, the movie that’s going to star Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel? Yeah. I look forward to seeing anything that the man directs, but sometimes I’d like to see one project more than the other — like in this case.
Here’s a synopsis of the book, to give us an idea of what to expect from the eventual film:
“It covers [Belfort's] decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks.”
What do you think of the two collaborating again on this project? Would you rather see either one do something else?
