After laying stagnant for about a year, development is moving fast on Disney’s update to the classic Cinderella. While Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) is locked in as director, Cate Blanchett recently came aboard as the evil stepmother and now we have some options for who may try on the glass slipper.

First up, we may have a Hanna reunion as Saoirse Ronan is one of the three contenders vying for the coveted lead role. A few newcomers round out the bunch with both Alicia Vikander (who recently starred alongside Mads Mikkelsen in A Royal Affair as well as in Anna Karenina for frequent Ronan collaborator Joe Wright) and Gabriella Wilde (who popped up in The Three Musketeers and will be seen next spring in the Carrie remake).

I’d be happy with any of the trio taking the role, but Vikander seems ripe to break out, whereas Ronan has already been heading her own films, especially with The Host coming next year. Written by About a Boy‘s Chris Weitz, the film follows the prince, who set for a politically arranged marriage, until the evil plan is threatened when the prince meets Cinderella. Production is set for next year, so we should have confirmation and further casting soon. [Variety]
