Coming straight from Cannes is the news of The Italian Job and The Negotiator director F. Gary Gray‘s next feature. After directing one of the most lackluster films of recent memory (with no help from Kurt Wimmer‘s ridiculous script), the director aims to bounce back with a futuristic heist film The Last Days of American Crime. [Deadline]

Avatar and Clash of the Titans star Sam Worthington has signed on to star in the drama written by Karl Gajdusek (who is rewriting William Monahan’s Oblivion script for Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski).  Check out a synopsis below.

In the futuristic tale, America responds to a second major terrorism attack by developing technology that eliminates the impulse to commit crimes of any kind. Worthington leads a heist team that plans to pull off a final job five days before the signal rubs out the criminal instinct.

I’m interested in seeing Gray take on a futuristic world, and he has already proved he could make somewhat decent heist entertainment with The Italian Job. Although Gray is also attached to a Kane & Lynch adaptation and the mystery thriller Hair of the Dog, The Last Days of American Crime will be his next film. It will shoot in September for a likely 2012 release.
