One of the last remaining question marks of the fall season has finally been answered. While we still haven’t seen any footage from the project, or even a single still, Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher has now landed on a release date of December 20th, with a little reworking behind the scenes. According to a press release, the director’s Moneyball follow-up will not be released by Sony’s Columbia Pictures, but rather their independent side, Sony Pictures Classics.
Written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, the true story brings together a stellar ensemble including Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave and Anthony Michael Hall. Our lead character is millionaire and schizophrenic John du Pont (Carell), who builds a wrestling training facility on his estate (called Team Foxcatcher). Things take a wild turn when he murders Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler and longtime friend David Schultz (Ruffalo).
Miller commented on the switch, saying, “I’ve been discussing Foxcatcher with Michael [Barker] and Tom [Bernard] since I began researching the story in 2005 and it’s always been my hope and expectation that they would distribute the film. Their passion and understanding of what Foxcatcher could be and their ability to market unique and complex films makes SPC the ideal home for me. They were great partners on Capote, and I’m thrilled to be back with SPC.”
