I’m willing to bet not many people have even heard of Real Steel. Disney isn’t releasing Shawn Levy‘s robot boxing blockbuster starring Hugh Jackman until October, but Deadline reports that Dreamworks has already starting development on a sequel.

Due to “strong response to internal screenings of the film, and at a CinemaCon presentation of footage in Las Vegas” they have set the original writer John Gatins (Coach Carter, Hard Ball) to take on the sequel. After the surprisingly entertaining Date Night, I’m interested to see if Levy has what it takes to make an action blockbuster.

Hugh Jackman definitely has the charisma, but let’s wait until October before making judgement on a possible sequel. Check out a trailer below for the original that also stars Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Kevin Durand, and Anthony Mackie.

Synopsis:

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Real Steel hits theaters October 7th.
