‘Evil Dead’ Remake Being Prepared; Director Announced

update: Bruce Campbell confirmed the remake news on Twitter, saying “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”

update #2: Bloody Disgusting reports that Fede Alvarez will direct this “quasi-remake” for Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Mandate. Alvarez directed the fantastic sci-fi short Panic Attack! from 2009. Check it out here and the original story below.

News of an Evil Dead remake seems to go hand in hand with news of a fourth movie in the original series, with both being frustratingly hard to get any kind of grip on. Bruce Campbell said very positive things about the script for the remake back in April, and added that he will even be producing. At the same time, he also said that the busy schedules of the creative team means that he doesn’t know when it would actually happen — and we, therefore, still have no idea what’s going on.

A new development has come in, as DreadCentral has learned that Sam Raimi‘s longtime editor Bob Murawski is heading to Detroit “to begin work” on a fourth Evil Dead movie. The project will apparently be “a small indie thing like the first two,” which Murawski didn’t even work on; he’s only credited for the third entry into the trilogy, Army of Darkness.

But what isn’t clear is if it’s a remake or a sequel. While one may lean toward the latter because of the mention of “the first two,” as well as it being referred to as the fourth movie in the series, I’m thinking that it’s a remake. Not only is Raimi commencing filming on Oz: The Great and Powerful this month, but there’s been essentially no mention of a script or casting for a notable project like this. While that obviously also applies to a remake, remember that if it’s a “small indie thing,” you wouldn’t necessarily read stories about it every day, and it wouldn’t have people like Raimi or Campbell working right on it; not much attention would get thrown its way. None of it’s set in stone, so read this as speculation for the time being.

Do you think this is a remake of or sequel to The Evil Dead? Or is it possible that this isn’t even factual?
