Had enough of zombies? Fed up with the glut of giant robot movies? Well, why not pit the brain-guzzlers against the oil-guzzlers? That’s what Sony Pictures is doing, having acquired the rights to Zombies Vs. Robots, a comic series written by Chris Ryall, with art by Ashley Wood and published by IDW. [Deadline]

Several studios were reportedly interested in the material, but Sony nabbed it. The project – which is being adapted by screenwriter JT Petty (The Burrowers) as a spec script called (at the moment) Inherit the Earth – is a joint effort by Platinum Dunes, Circle of Confusion (which has solid zombie chops, having produced The Walking Dead) and IDW.

Michael Bay will be producing, along with Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs. The plot of the comics has something to do with a band of robots protecting the last girl on earth from flesh-starved zombies. I think we can leave it at that.

The comic series has a die-hard cult following, who will likely be up in arms over a tentpole treatment of this thing, but I say what the hell.
