This November will see the release of Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo, a film that holds the distinction of being his first narrative feature that doesn’t star Leonardo DiCaprio since 1999′s Bringing Out the Dead. Their time together probably isn’t over, but it’s an interesting thing to consider, as they’ve become so indelibly matched that many have referred to the actor as “Scorsese‘s new De Niro.”
There’s the chance that they’ll get back together for The Wolf of Wall Street — if Ridley Scott doesn’t decide to helm — and we may have another project to add to that lineup. THR says that the two of them, along with The Departed writer William Monahan, will all collaborate again on The Gambler. This is a remake of a 1974 James Caan film about a New York City English teacher with a secret addiction to gambling, hence the title. The lead sinks to low depths because of his affliction, including extorting “money from his mother and convince one of his students to shave points in a basketball game.” It’s an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky‘s novella, which I imagine Monahan will take his cues from when he writes the script.
Scorsese is set to direct, although THR claims that DiCaprio isn’t signed on yet; he’s only said to be of interest to the team, which also includes the original film’s producer, Irwin Winkler. However, Deadline claims that the actor is attached, so make of that what you will — I’ll guess that he’s starring.
Even then, them actually getting around to it isn’t such a sure thing. With the director’s busy schedule and older age, it’s hard to picture him making everything he has lined up at the moment. This aforementioned schedule includes Silence, The Irishman, Sinatra, Furious Love, and his Five Obstructions remake with Lars von Trier. That is a lot for a 70-year-old to have on their plate; I don’t know if he can make all of them, as much as I would want that to happen.
If it does happen, though, I’ll be there on opening day, seeing as Scorsese is one of my favorite filmmakers of all time. Plus, his work with DiCaprio has been almost entirely great; their last collaboration, Shutter Island, is a near-masterpiece that should have been nominated for Best Picture (and Director, Actor, etc.). I feel as if I’ll stick with him for the rest of my life, which is a commitment that I have no trouble maintaining.
Is a remake of The Gambler something you would want to see them work on? Have you seen the original?
