Life Finds a Way: ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ Helmer Colin Trevorrow Will Direct ‘Jurassic Park 4’

He was (potentially) in the running for Star Wars: Episode VII and, soon after that news, got his own Flight of the Navigator remake starting up at Disney — for that alone, count Colin Trevorrow lucky after having made only one, tiny Sundance movie. But if you think that was a lot, things have just turned a much bigger corner, as Deadline tell us the director of Safety Not Guaranteed has been tapped for one of Hollywood’s biggest looming prospects: Jurassic Park 4, the coming-sooner-than-you-think (coming-sooner-than-is-ready?) continuation / reboot of Steven Spielberg‘s long-dormant prehistoric franchise. Now, if you’ll excuse every aspiring filmmaker as they start throwing signals at Amblin Entertainment…

Now, even a mild skeptic of this entire prospect (hello) would like to know what’s going on with the general story of this one — if only for a quick fit of entertainment — but any “deal” on the script from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is under lock and key. Past the unveiling of Trevorrow, the central point of focus, then, is why they’d sign with a guy who seems totally out-of-left-field in terms of prior credentials. It turns out that a meeting with Universal and some of the Jurassic Park brass (Spielberg and Frank Marshall, we ought to assume) led to the conclusion that, in him, they have both an original fan and someone who’s “part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur.” Despite my not being able to so much as remember the last dinosaur movie which opened in theaters (Tree of Life discounted), that’s how it managed to coalesce.

Jurassic Park 4 will move at an insane clip following this announcement, with production expected to begin next month in Baton Rouge. Of course, you have to find actors before any serious shooting starts, so expect names to drop in the next few weeks. After that, the film will open on June 13th, 2014.

Is Trevorrow a smart choice to carry the Jurassic Park mantle? How are your expectations altered?
