There aren’t many comedic actors to emerge in the last few years who can inspire as divided a reaction as Ken Jeong. Through his performances as Mr. Chow in the Hangover movies and Señor Chang on Community, he’s established a specific type of performance that could reasonably be considered abrasive. Some, however, get a kick out of it, and it’s helped vault him from the status of an unknown to a legitimate name.
For what is surely his biggest job yet, TheWrap reports that Jeong will star in and produce Lionsgate’s comedy The Chung Factor. As they say, it follows “a nice guy who meets the girl of his dreams after being unlucky in love,” and when concerned with “screwing up the relationship, he takes advice from an offbeat relationship coach, played by Jeong.” Get ready for wackiness — “the coach is actually the woman’s ex-boyfriend and is out to sabotage the relationship and win her back.” The story is based on a spec script by Andy Selsor; it’s been on the Black List since 2005, but Lionsgate only picked it up today. Seeing as he’s a producer, it’s almost certainly a decision that has something to do with Jeong.
Should he go down his typical comedic route, you can pretty much imagine how the character will play onscreen. And, consequentially, you can also imagine if you’ll enjoy this or hate it without any hesitation. Though I find some of Jeong‘s material and sensibilities grating after he’s been onscreen for more than five minutes, he can be pretty amusing in that short window of time. But an entire movie that stars the guy? I might not be able to handle it.
Are you a Jeong supporter? How does a movie led by him sound?
