After the male lead for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis was switched from Colin Farrell to Robert Pattinson, it seems like Marion Cotillard, the original female lead, is also on their way out.
ThePlaylist picked up from the movie’s fan site (kind of early for a fan site, isn’t it?) that the site for the movie’s producer only listed Pattinson as being in the cast. Then, that was changed to including both himself and Keira Knightley, as you can see below:
But the plot thickens! Now she’s no longer listed there. If you’re confused, it’s possible that there’s a desire to keep any announcements saved for a future date; this would make the idea of any removal more sensible.
What we do know for sure is that Cotillard is indeed off the project, as her representative confirmed her departure to ThePlaylist, likely due to her recently announced pregnancy. I wouldn’t doubt Knightley’s involvement, as she’s just worked with Cronenberg on the Freud film A Dangerous Method (see photo above). But I’m still concerned, because the presence and acting styles of the two actresses are very different, so I wonder if Knightley will be able to play a character that was originally cast with a different kind of performer.
Strangely enough, Paul Giamatti seems to have also left the cast after being listed in it for some time. Some think that this would have to do with a drop in pedigree with the new leads, although I think it’s simply a matter of scheduling; this cast was set up for while, and actors often have to drop out of movies they’re cast in years before filming. But, again, what will a new cast change from what was expected before? In Cronenberg we trust, but I can’t help being a tad worried.
How do you feel about all these cast changes? Do they have you worried?
