Scoring box office hit after box office hit, writing-directing duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (American Reunion, Harold & Kumar) are not going away anytime soon. (Well, until they score box office bomb after box office bomb.) With one project already set up at Universal, Variety now tell us they’ve partnered with Good Universe to focus on a raunchy comedy titled Cherries; the spec screenplay comes from Jim and Brian Kehoe, though the two directors in question will further flesh things out and, down the line, probably direct.

Its title is a slight, disgusting hint as to the plot’s content, wherein three simple-minded fathers realize their daughters’ prom night will lead to the taking of virginities. Knowing about their pact to score, the leads take it upon themselves to save a few people’s dignity before things go pop. (Sorry.) A crass idea, but those can sometimes be the finest sort with which to launch any comedy — maybe even a franchise.

In whatever way, the current — most likely future, too — incarnation of Cherries‘ screenplay leaves room for future installments, something Hurwitz and Schlossberg‘s credits would indicate a familiarity with. But is it worth the treatment? Although there’s skepticism on my own part, we’ll be able to make a judgement when the work comes through.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg will be producing with Chris Cowles, while the Chinese company DMG Entertainment (Looper, Iron Man 3) are also throwing support.
