Following up one of my favorite films of last year, I was overly content with the idea that Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman would be the only main players in We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsey‘s upcoming western Jane Got a Gun. However, a pleasant surprise has landed tonight that the project is getting another major addition, according to Deadline.

Based on Brian Duffield‘s Black List script, the story centers on a woman, Jane (Portman), who contacts an estranged ex-lover after her husband’s been viciously attacked by his old gang. The two of them come together and fight these criminal confederates, with he teaching Jane in the ways of weapons handling and the art of personal defense — a mentor and protégé relationship, even.

The trade reports that Zero Dark Thirty star Joel Edgerton is now looking to join the cast as a gang leader named John Bishop who is tracking down Hammond’s husband. While the Aussie actor popped up in a number of Hollywood projects including the latest Star Wars films and King Arthur, his major break-out arrived in the tense crime drama Animal Kingdom. Now, after some little-seen turns in films like The Thing and Warrior, he’s deservedly on the rise again with his upcoming (excellent) Kathryn Bigelow film, as well as Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby next summer.

Production kicks off early next year for a hopeful late 2013 release.

Are you looking forward Edgerton joining this cast?
