With today’s ever-expanding global marketplace, the true fate of a film can not be determined until it reaches the ends of the earth. The latest example is Guillermo del Toro‘s large-scale spectacle Pacific Rim, which will likely fail to reach the $100 million mark in the United States. Three weeks later, however, it has hit screens in China, where it debuted to a record-breaking $9 million yesterday, pulling in 23% higher than any Harry Potter film there.

Now Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is considering a sequel to the project, which should delight the hearts of geekdom everywhere and bring up an interesting predicament. Leading up to the release many were clamoring for this “original” property, but now that it has the potential to being turned into yet another franchise, will the same anticipation be justified/deserved?

With Travis Beacham and del Toro already churning out ideas for the follow-up, if its international success continues, we suppose this sequel is inevitable, but this writer would much rather see the director take on At the Mountains of Madness, or a variety of other projects he’s attached himself to, especially considering the disappointment that came with his latest feature.

Do you want to see a Pacific Rim sequel, or would you like to see del Toro take on something else?
