With the summer blockbuster season in full swing and audiences flocking to theaters, it means one of the best times of the year for film fans is just a few months away. The fall brings some of year’s most-anticipated films, whether its at festivals or in theaters, and today we’ve got our first update on a few works we can’t wait to see and where they may be initially surfacing.
Venice Film Festival starts off the proceedings on August 28th and Variety is reporting a few titles rumored for the line-up. We already know Paul Schrader‘s The Canyons will have an out of competition slot (but that will be weeks after the film already debuts on VOD and in theaters here) and Kim Ki-duk‘s Moebius has been heavily rumored. The trade now reports that a likely contender is Alfonso Cuaron‘s Children of Men follow-up Gravity, which could show there before its October theatrical release.
Another is Steve McQueen‘s Shame follow-up Twelve Years a Slave, which would see the director returning to the Italy-set festival. The trade also says Paul Greengrass’ Tom Hanks-led Captain Phillips, Jonathan Glazer’s Scarlett Johansson-led Under the Skin, and Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem are all being considered, as well as Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff follow-up Night Moves and Catherine Breillat‘s Abuse of Weakness.
Moving on to a few titles that are now rumored to be out of the Venice running are Bennett Miller’s Moneyball follow-up Foxcatcher, Spike Jonze’s Her, the biopic Diana, and Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer. The other options make sense considering they won’t actually hit theaters until the tail end of the year, but hopefully Snowpiercer can find a worthy premiere slot soon, as well as a release date.
