We’ve gotten a few spare hints for what exactly the first new Hollywood Godzilla film since Roland Emmerich‘s 1998 blockbuster will entail and it looks like we’ll still be only getting the big picture piece by piece. As we know, Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards is taking his sci-fi invasion knowledge to the major studio playing field with Legendary and WB’s take on the monster, but now a brief piece of mystery has now been uncovered from the director, in regards to the exact tone his upcoming film will have.

In the latest issue of Total Film (via Coventry Telegraph), Edwards is intent to follow through with the style that launched his career, saying that he will “take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film” and that after being “interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him” he was dying to see another take on the monster and his “main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?'”

After being happy with the studio filmmaking world, he also added, “I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.” It’s great to see he still has a sense of humor when being put through the Hollywood wringer. I loved Edwards’ intimate style with Monsters and it’s great to see he can hopefully use it to give new life to this beloved franchise.

Scripted by David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman Begins), Max Borensetein (The Seventh Son) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), Godzilla arrives on May 16th, 2014.
