The idea behind Grudge Match — Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone both stepping back into onscreen boxing, to go against each other — has always felt like a total gimmick, for better or worse. (This is not a sequel to Cop Land, by the way.) But as a lover of Raging Bull and, generally, fan of the Rocky series, it’s difficult not to hold the smallest morsel of interest in how either would be shaping up — both as men going head-to-head, and as physical specimens of their own. Well, not that Stallone has been too shy about showing himself off lately, most appropriately with Rocky Balboa.
Long before an actual release, we can see how at least one pugilist is aging under a shirt. Thanks to a Twitter user who alerted /Film, our first photo of director Peter Segal‘s duo has emerged, showing the two stars, an unidentified male, and, on the right, NBA player Robin Lopez. Both look decent for their advanced age, I’d say, and if there’s any immediately noticeable rust on the machines, it’s sure to have been worked into Grudge Match‘s screenplay — first drafted by Tim Kelleher, most recently shaped by Entourage‘s Doug Ellin.
A look can be taken below:
With a cast that also includes Alan Arkin, Kim Basinger, Kevin Hart, and Jon Bernthal, Grudge Match will open on November 15.
How does it feel to see De Niro and Stallone back in trunks and gloves?
