While we equally groan when the next big-budget film gets announced in 3D (or even worse, post-converted), it’s always welcome when a filmmaker can truly utilize the technology for something other than piles of money. The latest example comes with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the wildly inventive director behind Amelie, The City of Lost Children and more. One of our most-anticipated films of the year,  The Young and Prodigious Spivet is based on the book by Reif Larsen and today our first look has arrived.

Coming from Kinopoisk (via The Playlist), the photo gives us a look at Kyle Catlett, who is playing a 12-year-old cartography enthusiast who goes aboard a cross-country trip on a freight train to the Smithsonian Institute. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter, Kathy Bates and Callum Keith Rennie, one can see more of our cast in the pictures above and below for the film that may see a Cannes premiere and hopefully a U.S. release before year’s end.

Are you looking forward to The Young and Prodigious Spivet? Have you read the source material?
