Vulture has reported that Steve Quale, the director of last year’s Final Destination 5 as well as the 2nd unit director/visual effects supervisor of both Avatar and Titanic, is in final negotiations to direct Category 6 for New Line Cinema. The movie will be another “found footage” movie, this time focusing on a group of high schoolers documenting a gigantic windstorm that blows through their town and destroys everything in its wake.

Given his past involvement in 3D, there’s a chance Category 6 will also be shot in that format which will most likely cause tons of seizures and vomiting as a result. The article also mentions that a “Category 6” storm doesn’t technically exist, as the scale storms are measured on only go to “Category 5.” I just wanted to cover my bases so I didn’t called out by The Weather Channel crowd. Those people are vicious.

As a sucker for disaster movies (apparently so is New Line, who also have San Andreas 3D on their slate), Category 6 is right up my alley…except for the fact that it’s found footage. Four years after Cloverfield brought the style back into the mainstream, I’m burned out on it but considering how cheap it is to do, I don’t expect it to ever die down again. And potentially mixing 3D and found footage together is a recipe for disaster, so part of me hopes that New Line and Quale won’t push for the added third dimension. Fingers crossed.

Any interest in Category 6? Would you be more interested if it wasn’t another found footage movie?
