Gwyneth Paltrow’s little brother isn’t so little any more – he’s carving his own path in the film industry, though it appears there’s no actual hurry to do so. In 2007, Jake Paltrow made his directorial debut with The Good Night, a comedy-drama boasting an all-star cast, including his big sister, but not much has happened since. Rumors connected the filmmaker to an untitled Noah Baumbach project, possibly the one photographed last December, but details on that are elusive at best. After a long period of inactivity, however, it seems Paltrow finally has a movie lined up, and there’s no secrets about this one.
Variety inform us he’ll direct Young Ones, a sci-fi thriller based on his own screenplay. The film — which just began principal photography in South Africa’s Northern Cape desert — follows a 14-year-old boy who fights to survive in a dystopian future where water is the most precious resource; more impressive is the cast, which includes big names such as Nicholas Hoult, Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, The Road). The move is understandable for Hoult, as it adds to his growing resume of genre films, including his recent turn in the zombie rom-com Warm Bodies, his turn as Beast in the new line of X-Men movies, and Bryan Singer‘s soon-to-be-released fantasy flick Jack the Giant Slayer.
Tristan Orpen Lynch and Michael Auret will produce Paltrow’s sophomore outing, along with executive producers Marina Fuentes, Peter Garde, James Atherton, Jan Pace, and Brian O’Shea. A release date for Young Ones has yet to be set.
