Helping to close out the summer this year is the serial killer drama The Calling. After co-directing and co-writing the short film that inspired This is the End, Jason Stone has helmed the project, adapted from Inger Ash Wolfe‘s novel. Currently available on VOD and landing in theaters in at the end of the month, today brings an exclusive clip from the drama.

The film follows Susan Sarandon as a detective in a small Ontario town that uncovers a series of killings. The clip we have today focuses on an early killing as Sarandon’s character and fellow detective (Gil Bellows) discover an unusual occurrence surrounding the body during an autopsy. Check out the clip below and the trailer here for the film also starring Ellen Burstyn, Donald Sutherland, and Topher Grace.

Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon) is used to leading a quiet life in a small town, with her mother (Ellen Burstyn), her painkillers, and an occasional drink. But when she stops on a routine call to check on a neighbor, she stumbles across a gruesome murder that shatters her peaceful existence. With the help of Detective Ray Greene (Gil Bellows) and a new transfer cop (Topher Grace), she unearths a series of killings across the country with similar, grisly crime scenes. When a local priest (Donald Sutherland) suggests there may be a link to an ancient ritual, Hazel finds herself on the trail of a religious serial killer following a deadly, higher calling. Based on the novel by Inger Ash Wolfe, it’s a dark, twisted journey to the shadowy landscape between faith and fear.

The Calling is now on VOD and hits theaters on August 29th, 2014.
