While the big star of the upcoming Godzilla reboot will be the title character himself, the monster does need some puny humans to conquer and before today, only one has been lined up for the battle. Attached earlier this year, director Gareth Edwards is looking at Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson to lead the film and while talks are still underway with the actor, a few more names have been added to the growing ensemble.
According to Variety, Breaking Bad lead Bryan Cranston is circling the project, as well as Martha Marcy May Marlene‘s Elizabeth Olsen. No details on their characters are known, as per usual, but no one is signing until they see the latest script from Frank Darabont.
Cranston appeared a batch of big films last year, from John Carter to Total Recall to Argo, and Godzilla would mark his first major role after finishing the last season of Breaking Bad, as production is aiming to kick off next month. As for Olsen, she has been expanding to films outside the indie realm, recently completing work on the Oldboy remake, but this would easily mark her biggest film yet. Under most other directors I’d be wary of such talents joining a blockbuster like this, but Edwards proved his skill for crafting relatable characters in Monsters, so hopefully it carries through on this expanded playing field.
Godzilla is set to arrive on May 16th, 2014.
