Baz Luhrmann had made another interesting choice in the casting process for his 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Deadline says that for the part of Jordan Baker, he’s cast the unknown Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki. In the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Baker is a famous female golfer and friends with Daisy. She served as a love interest for story lead Nick Carraway. While I wouldn’t exactly consider it to be a lead role, there’s some real screentime for the new actress.
The thing is, she’s a true unknown. Said to come straight from the Victorian College of the Arts, it would appear that she hasn’t acted in any film or television before; far as I can tell, she doesn’t even have an IMDb page. It’s an interesting choice because he could basically get any actress he wants for the part, but he chose her.
Regarding the choice, Luhrmann was quoted as saying:
“It was a surprising result, but Elizabeth‘s grasp of the material and her chemical connectivity to Tobey Maguire, in addition to her striking, athletic appearance, had us in a place where we were fully confident and ready to take the leap of giving the role of Jordan Baker to what, I guess, people would term ‘a discovery.’ We are thrilled.”
For those of you who don’t already know, the movie already stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson. Ben Affleck was in talks for the role of Tom Buchanan, but had to leave due to directing obligations; an actor for the role is currently being sought. Bradley Cooper said he was interested in the part, but I don’t know if that will actually go anywhere (even if I wouldn’t mind it).
The Great Gatsby is expected to begin production this fall, with a 2012 release in mind.
Are you surprised he cast such an unknown in this part? Does it change your expectations for the film at all?
