A little while ago there were rumblings that a sequel to the cult hit Trainspotting would be on the way, based off of the sequel to the original film’s source material, a novel titled Porno by the original author Irvine Welsh. Since the time when the film was most heavily speculated to be made, director Danny Boyle and star Ewan McGregor have continued to do separate projects and it seemed like a fleeting idea that would never materialize.
However, Boyle recently told Cinematical that the film could still happen, saying that “We have a very strong idea that it would be a wonderful thing to reapproach, to do again, when they have aged clearly into a mid-life kind of crisis, basically”. But he also stated that it would involve the characters aging into a “mid-life kind of crisis,” so it may not be something to hold your breath for (something he knows would require a waiting period).
The book which it would be based upon is apparently not very loved by the prospective director or star. If this were to be based off of some new material or be the subject of heavy alteration from its source material remains to be seen, if the movie is at all.
His ultimate reasoning behind such a project is summed up best in this quote:
This is an imaginative thing to look at these guys, who you kind of fell in love with and a whole generation fell in love with in a certain kind of way, and then you see them again and they’ve aged, just like we all do. And then it becomes about that, and I think that would be really nice.
While I can understand his basic desire to go back to this, I don’t think that it’s something that we need to have in the filmographies of either of the main parties who would be involved. Both continue to do good-to-great work (The Ghost Writer is a solid thriller and 127 Hours is one of my favorite movies of the year), and I would be more than happy to see another collaboration between them. I just don’t think I would like it to happen under these circumstances.
What are your thoughts on Boyle’s comments? Do you think a Trainspotting sequel could work?
