Following last year’s $437 million-grosser Les Miserables, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood found a rejuvenated interest in the musical genre and while we’re still awaiting news on Wicked and even The Book of Mormon, today brings an update on another long-gestating big-screen update.
According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox have signed on the dotted line for a new Guys and Dolls musical adaptation, based on Frank Loesser‘s iconic play, which came from Damon Runyon‘s short stories. While a writer and director haven’t been attached yet, producers are already looking at possible leads and have their sights set on Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who have reciprocated the interest. Being two of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood, they would have big shoes to fill.
The duo would be taking over roles by Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, who famously portrayed the characters of Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson, respectively, in Joseph L. Mankiewicz‘s 1955 version, which followed a group of gamblers. While any formal attachments will come once a script is in hand, the possibilities of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt together should make for quite a charismatic pairing.
