With last night’s news of Paramount dropping their long-in-development Dune adaptation comes report of another space project heating up. Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Go, Jumper, Fair Game) has been developing an untitled Moon project (previously known as Luna) since 2007. THR now reports an ignited interest as Liman has been meeting with actors and hopes to shoot this summer, although no greenlight has been given yet.

Jake Gyllenhaal was previously attached, but has left the project. Stepping in as his replacement, Liman has met with Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine. There is also a female lead and Liman is considering Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde. Check out a synopsis below.

The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-NASA employee.

With interest in this project, it means his other project All You Need Is Kill has been put on the backburner. I would like to see Liman take on a sci-fi film and it seems like that genre is on the upswing in Hollywood. It’s somewhat useless to take any real consideration to the above shortlist since Liman will be meeting with even more actors, but it is good to hear Paramount has made this a new priority.

Would you like to see this as Liman’s next film? Who should star?
