With a worldwide gross of over $215 million, Jack Reacher was a decent first collaboration for Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise, but the duo had set their goals higher, reteaming for the fifth Mission: Impossible film. Today we got perhaps the most obvious news we’ll get all year, as Cruise has signed on to return to the Ethan Hunt role, following up the actor’s biggest hit ever with Ghotocol, but the bigger question that remains is who will write and direct.
Although McQuarrie is Paramount’s favorite for the gig, an update has arrived that may throw a wrench in the plans. According to THR, he has signed to direct and script a remake of the Cold War thriller Ice Station Zebra for WB. Released in 1968 and starring Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan and Jim Brown, the film followed a Navy submarine that was in competition with the Russians to secure confidential documents from the Arctic.
While there’s no word yet when either of the above projects could go into production, we’d have to assume McQuarrie would take the bigger gig if offered. But if he opts out of the spy thriller, we’d expect the Ice Station Zebra reboot to be next and don’t be surprised if Russians are replaced by North Koreans, especially if Hollywood continues their trend. Check out the trailer for the original below.

In the case of evaluating David Cronenberg, — or at least forming the sort of career narrative seemingly essential to auteurist analysis — it’s inevitable to propose something of a rupture within his oeuvre: the very evident graduation from grindhouse to arthouse, and, with it, an ascension from body to mind. What dictated these labels […]
