We got word earlier this week that Matthew Vaughn was in talks for Star Wars: Episode VII, but he’s not the only possible director Disney and Lucasfilm are taking a look at for the sci-fi saga. The highly improbably choices of Steven Spielberg, Joss Whedon and Darren Aronofsky were bandied about, as well as Neil Blomkamp and Alfonso Cuarón, but now the most left-field choice yet as been brought on the table.
Debuting at Sundance earlier this year, the sci-fi comedy Safety Not Guaranteed was made for under $1 million and went on to gross over four times its budget, but now director Colin Trevorrow may be making a massive leap for his sophomore film. Celebuzz is reporting the director is also in early talks with producers for first film in this new trilogy. Although George Lucas specifically stated he wouldn’t be the one to find this new director — instead giving the responsibility to producer Kathleen Kennedy — it’s reported that the creator, and his company, loved Trevorrow’s debut film.
While it would be quite a jump for the director, he has dealt with a tinge of sci-fi for his first film, but more importantly, he was able to nail an emotional quality that is so often rare in blockbusters, especially the last set of Star Wars film. Although everything is in the early stages, if he went on to be chosen, I could equate this career leap to Marc Webb‘s 500 Days of Summer to The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy. If those set of films are any evidence, the studio will be guiding the big setpiece elements with seemingly little directorial input, while Trevorrow could hopefully commandeer the rest.
Would you like to see Trevorrow direct the new Star Wars film?
