‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Reboot On The Way

According to Vulture (via The Playlist) we’re going to be seeing a new Mr. and Mrs. Smith in the near future.  The film will be a complete reboot from the franchise that consists of one film that was released a mere 5 years ago and it will have a completely new cast.

Writing film news can make a cinephile depressed.  You can write about the one story a week that involves a new, interesting and original idea that you will find it hard to comment on since you don’t know more than what is told, or you can write about the fifty other stories which are all reboots or sequels to films that don’t need sequels or reboots and be completely cynical about it.

The truth about it is that I loved the original movie. It was hilarious and a fun action film.  It even went on to gross just over $478 Million worldwide (according to BoxOfficeMojo), so what is the studio’s reason for wanting to hit the little red button here?  It most likely is the cost  for them to get the original cast back, considering that Brangelina starred in the film. Why not try and make most of that money again, on the cheap? hence, the reboot.

I can’t say I think this is a terrible idea, I just don’t like how it sounds on paper.  In the end, whatever happens I’ll always have my DVD copy of the first movie to enjoy.

There have been no announcements about who will direct, write or star in the film.

What are your hopes for the reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith?
