‘The Runaways’ Trailer

The first trailer for  Apparition‘s newly acquired The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart in the lead as real-life rock star Joan Jett, with supporting work by Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, playing the title band’s rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist respectively. The movie is directed by Floria Sigismondi and will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month. You can watch the teaser below or at MTV:

The Runaways were composed of five members, including the two mentioned above (although they had nine members over their career span) . They had a surprisingly short career, lasting from only 1975-1979, and nine album releases (many of those being best of’s/live albums). However, they left a mark on the music of their period, as evidenced with this particular film’s existence.

While the trailer is very short and only shows small snippets, it could make for an interesting project. I do wonder though as someone who hasn’t listened to their music at all if I could find myself engaged in the story, although I’m not too worried as one expects this to be more about the people as opposed to the songs. Stewart seems to have the look of Jett down, but Fanning seems too young for her role. In real life, Currie was 18 when the band formed. Fanning is only 15, which seems a little off to me. Nevertheless, that shouldn’t be too much of a detraction, and hopefully the movie will live up to any potential it may have. We should have some idea when it premieres at Sundance next month and hits theaters on March 19, 2010.

Stewart is not the lead...Dakota is. This film is based on Cherie Curie's book Neon Angel and Kristen's role is the supporting one.

Actually, Cherie Currie was 15 as well when she joined the band.
