J.J. Abrams Directing Mystery Project Before ‘Star Trek’ Sequel?

In a recent New York Times interview with Paramount Chairman Brad Grey (a University at Buffalo graduate) talked about director J.J. Abrams and have a hint that his next film may not be a Star Trek sequel. Check out the quote below.

As for J. J. Abrams, a producer and the director of “Star Trek,” Mr. Grey is looking for “Star Trek 2.” And “Mission: Impossible IV.” And possibly before either, what he called another “tentpole” film to be directed by Mr. Abrams, and yet to be announced. “We have been wildly ambitious,” Mr. Grey said of his plans. “It has much to do with the fact that we are feeling as strong as we are.”

It was recently reported that we won’t see a new Star Trek film until at least 2012, so what could he do in between? Well, it sounds a lot like 500 Rads, a secret project rumored about a month ago. But with only a $25 million budget, I can’t see it being the “tentpole film” that Grey talks about.

Do you want to see Abrams do something else before another Star Trek? What could it be?

I have run across several pieces of information on the Web about JJ Abrams Secret Projects lately that don't add up, unless the information is about two separate projects.

The first project (which showed up on the Web in October 2009), is the "tentpole" blockbuster that I believe they are excited about becoming another franchise for Paramount. The recent $2 million plus script (written by Simon Kinberg & Aline Brosh McKenn) that Paramount purchased for JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Productions tells me that it is for a very expensive movie and not the recently leaked "500 Rads" movie--if the leaked information is correct. "500 Rads" is supposedly the one being written by Abrams and it's the one (I believe) that he hopes to direct "early" this year in Europe for a lower budget of $25+ million. The best guess as to what the plot might be comes from the UK Filmstaker site--with a mention of a Chernobyl type scenerio. But it's all just guess work at this point.
