The Top 10 R-Rated Comedies of The Last Decade

Funny People

By Merrill Barr + Dan Mecca

With the recent success of The Hangover, becoming the highest grossing R rated comedy in history, and with the release of Funny People only a day away, we’ve compiled a list of the best R-rated comedies of the last decade (2000-2009).

Honorable Mentions

Zack & Miri Make a Porno (Smith, 2008)

Role Models (Wain, 2008)

Hot Fuzz (Wright, 2007)

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Charles, 2006)

Old School (Phillips, 2003)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Stoller, 2008)

Read the rest of this list below

Top Ten

Clerks 2

10. Clerks 2 (Smith, 2006)

When die hard Kevin Smith fans first heard that the indie director was doing a sequel to his debut cult hit Clerks, many cried out in anger. But they were all silenced by the what came out his creative head. The sequel pays tribute to it’s predecessor while standing out on its own. It also illustrates how far Smith has come as a director, in both a technical sense as well as his story telling ability.

tropic thunder

9. Tropic Thunder (Stiller, 2008)

Ben Stiller’s war spoof is right up there with Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Even the Academy agreed on this (to an extent) when it gave Robert Downey Jr. a well-deserved supporting actor nomination for his role. This film is everything that is right about the spoof genre.

Shaun of the Dead

8. Shaun of the Dead (Wright, 2004)

Speaking of spoofs, this tight, witty and action-packed zombie film spoof brought the brilliant comedic minds of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (who offered up Hot Fuzz 3 years later) to the States in a big way. Thankfully, it looks as though they’re here to stay.

Royal Ts

7. The Royal Tenebaums (Anderson, 2001)

Arguably Wes Anderson’s best film and the definitive example of what film scholars will refer to as (and DO refer to as) a “Wes Anderson film.”

High Fidelity

6. High Fidelity (Frears, 2000)

The dark “John Cusack rom-com,” this Stephen Frears-directed study in relationships is one of the best films of the decade, comedy or drama. While Cusack’s Rob complains on his ill-fated conquests, Jack Black carves himself a career by making hysterical rock-related jokes.

Wedding Crashers

5. Wedding Crashers (Dobkin, 2005)

Wedding Crashers is an excellent romantic comedy. But it also provides just the right amount of dirty jokes to make it a pleasure for all that watch it. It is a laugh riot from start to finish, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn make a great team and I only wish they would do more movies together. The film also features Christopher Walken so you know it is worth checking out.

Knocked Up

4. Knocked Up (Apatow, 2007)

In Seth Rogen’s first lead comedic role, this Judd Apatow feature is pure gold. Similar to The 40 Year Old Virgin, it addresses a dilemma that many young adults face – unplanned pregnancy. While a serious issue, Apatow and co. tackle it with laughs and sentimentality, lightening the load of an extremely packed issue – for two hours at least.

The Hangover

3. The Hangover (Phillips, 2009)

While it’s only been out for a couple months in theaters, it has already become the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time. It truly is a work of comedy art. It took everything right about all the other films on this list and multiplied it by 100, delivering a mammoth comedy that awards laughs to the masses.

Superbad

2. Superbad (Mottola, 2007)

Superbad, written by comedy geniuses Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is everything that is right about the raunchy teen comedy. I would say that Superbad is this decade’s American Pie but on such a higher level of comedy and amusement in general. Anyone who is in or went to high school understands exactly what the characters are going through. This film should be (and by many is) held high with some of the classics and be used as an example of a great R-rated comedy.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

1. The 40 Year Old Virgin (Apatow, 2005)

In Apatow’s directorial debut we see both Seth Rogen and Steve Carrell break out into starring roles in perhaps the greatest R rated comedy ever. The story of what every virgin thinks about (what if IT never happens?) is truly one of the best comedies ever. It is packed with laughs and was a true sign of things to come for the Apatow team.

Do you agree with this list? Do you think Funny People will make the count?

Clerks 2 should be higher up imo. Also the 40 yr old virgin at 1? i know it's a good movie but hell i laughed 100 times more at superbad.. all these movies have some kind of crude humor. I Love it :D
  • Troy
nice list but all "white" movies.... Next Day Air was great..... But I must admit.... The Hangover was classic...
  • tibo
Great list... I also loved School for scoundrel, Mr Woodcock and Step Brothers
  • ashisbaby
How Shaun of the Dead made it into this list is beyond me. Grandma's Boy would have been a better choice. Clerks 2 should have rated in the top three and to be perfectly honest I didn't care for Knocked Up. Baby Mama was better but still not great. Oh, and what about Farce of the Penguin?
  • Evan M.
I agree with most of your list. But Hot Fuzz deserves way more than an honourable mention. It should be top 5 at least. And where's Thank You For Smoking?

    Still, a good list.
  • At the end of the day, this is just Merrill's list. Mine would look substantially different as I'm sure most of the other staff's would; bitching about what did and didn't make the cut is null and void considering it's an opinion piece at heart.

Disagreeing with the opinion? Well, have at it. :)
  • Movie guy
how can you not have old school in the list
  • lorn
Super Troopers was totally robbed. It should've been #1 but didn't even make honorable mention?
  • Rob
Disagree with some, Wedding Crashers has to go, was poor, Old School was definitely better. I thought Tropic Thunder was appalling, given the cast it just wasn't funny. Don't think 40 Year Old Virgin deserves the top spot, it's good but it wanes in the second act and like most Apatow's, it's way too long.

Different choice, it's more of a comedy/drama but In Bruges, hilarious and a good action drama.

Other contenders have to be Step Brothers, it was almost as funny as Dumb and Dumber, definitely Ferrel's best R-rated. Adventureland is also worth a nod, all-round funny, enjoyable watch.
  • John
Strangers With Candy (the film), Ghost World, Election, Friends With Money, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Transamerica, Goodbye Lenin, This Filthy World, Just One Time, The Matador, Nine Dead Gay Guys, Storytelling, etc
  • Observe and Report was one of my favorite films of the year (in a year populated by great flicks, mind you) and something I'm sure will go down as a cult classic a few years down the line. I understand it not being everybody's cup of tea, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the blackest comedies to come out in years (and not to mention well shot/cut/scored etc. etc.). It almost feels weird calling it a comedy, though, so I can understand it not being on this list.
  • Jack Giroux
But how does that make it not a great movie?
  • No, because it is an adult version of Paul Blart. (I know that is an overused argument but it is true)
  • What the hell are you talking about Merrill? Paul Blart and Observe and Report are so far apart it is ridiculous. I just rewatched it and I definitely think it should be on the list. Mark my words, it is going to be a cult classic.
  • Jack Giroux
Why? Because its a great smart comedy and not a run of the mill summer comedy like Wedding Crashers?
  • Observe and Report does not belong here
  • Jack Giroux
Also, why no love for The Foot Fist Way and ESPECIALLY Observe and Report!
  • Mike Murphy
The list is pretty solid except with Superbad at number 2, I was really disappointed with that film. Like i laughed when I first saw it, but its just not funny anymore (except for when he gets hit with the bat, that part is still awesome, but thats it!). Its unbalanced and way too long and Michael Cera just sucks. Also, I think Wedding Crashers should be removed from the list completely (it wasnt that funny either) and replaced with I Love You, Man which was an incredible comedy. I'm glad to see Juno is not included at all on this list in any way and I'm glad Clerks II is on the list (though I'd have it higher) and Zack and Miri is honorably mentioned (Kevin Smith is a genius). I think Knocked Up or Shaun of the Dead (or Hot Fuzz) should be number 1, hysterical comedies. There are some other comedies that I'd like to see added somewhere (many of them have already been mentioned) but its 80% solid.
  • How is Shaun of the Dead not number one? Also however unintentionally Tommy Wiseau's The Room needs to be on here. No other film is as fun to laugh at (or with?) as this. Not one.
  • Nick Newman
It should be a tie between Hot Fuzz & Shaun of the Dead. Two of the best comedies, R rated or no, of the decade.
  • Jack Giroux
No I think the first Scary movie is funny, it succeeds the same way Team America does except Team America is a lot funnier. Even when I judge Clerks II as a standalone, it is pretty good but nothing great.
  • Also by the standards you judge Team America then Scary Movie should be on this list because it pokes fun at every horror movie cliche. But it is still a shit movie.
  • Did you really walk into Clerks 2 expecting to overwhelm the greatness of the first one?
  • Jack Giroux
I know that, I'm just saying there is a disappointment factor to Clerks II. I just liked how Team America poked fun at all the action movie cliches, cheesy lines, and all the hilarious montages.
  • You had to throw in the Michael Bay shot didn't you. But besides that. Just because it is a satire doesn't make it good. This isn't to say that Matt & Trey make bad stuff (south park movie) but Team America fails. It is South Park with puppets. If I want South Park I will watch South Park. Also, I didn't say Clerk 2 is better than 1 (although I find 2 stand better to repeat viewings). If this list covered from 1993 to now Clerks would be on the list. But as for 2000-2009 it deserves it's place.
  • Jack Giroux
Team America is a hilarious satire of bad action movies (michael Bay movies) and you could also say the same thing for Pineapple Express. Clerks II is pretty good, but not great and its not nearly as good as the original.
  • Team America is a bad movie. I thought it was good when I first saw it but after a year or two I realized how poor it really is. Pineapple Express and Sarah Marshall are the only 2 Apatow films I hate. I laughed once during Sarah and never during Pineapple. Bad Sants is a horrible movie (it is). Burn After Reading is another one of those drama/comedies that really doesn't place well in strictly comedy. Wedding Crashers I think deserves it place because of the comedy team that brings us and works so well. I was going have Hot Fuzz on the list but having Shaun of the Dead pretty much covered all of that. As for Clerks 2. I wish I could have placed it higher. It deserves it's place because it honors the first one very well but also at the same time manages to stand on it's own. That is why it is on the list.
  • Jack Giroux
I almost want to weep that Wedding Crashers is placed ahead of High Fidelity, Tropic Thunder, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Borat, and ESPECIALLY Royal Tenebaums! I always thought it was just a B comedy, funny, but nothing special. I also don't think The Hangover is better then a lot of the films on the list. Where is Burn After Reading? Pineapple Express? Bad Santa? and Team America? I like all the movies on the list, but they are mostly B comedies or just pretty good.
  • @Jack would have LOVED to seen Bad Santa or Pineapple Express on the list. Team America is a really bad movie though, have to agree with Merrill on that.
  • Nick
I definitely feel Apatow dominates this list a little too much, I think Shaun of the Dead should be alot higher and Hot Fuzz too. I also agree with Vince that Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Role Models should've made it over Wedding Crashers. Borat also definitely deserved a higher placement.
  • GooPC
"Walk Hard" should definitely be on there, it's my personal favorite comedy. Also what about "Anchorman"?
  • @GooPC: Anchorman was PG-13
@Nick + @Vince: I agree with Wedding Crashers. I think it kind of falls apart towards the end. I really don't think Clerks 2 deserves a place and would have liked to see any of the honorable mentions over it.

Love Superbad though, that is probably my favorite on the list.
  • Vince
I agree with the movies on the list, though I would've switched out "Wedding Crashers" for "Role Models" or "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which were as funny if not more so. "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is an absolute classic, definitely. "The Hangover" is high up there, and "High Fidelity" I just saw a couple of weeks back and it's excellent, with a wicked performance by Jack Black...seriously.

Hate "Old School" though, I think that just might be me...
