Darren Aronofsky Prepping New Film To Star Natalie Portman

A story at the Hollywood Reporter is telling us that Darren Aronofsky’s (Requiem for A Dream, The Wrestler) next film will not be his proposed RoboCop remake/sequel/reboot or whatever, and will actually be a film he’s had in development since 2007 called Black Swan.  Also emerging from this story is that Natalie Portman is set to star in the lead role.

This is the first time I’ve even heard of this movie, as I assumed his next movie was going to be RoboCop, as several places have already listed it as being in some stage of production.  According to /Film “Portman would play a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in to a competitive showdown with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance.”  And according to the story, it’s a mystery as to whether or not the rival dancer is actually real or not.

The plot to this movie sounds kinda…ehh. It seems like a generic idea for a thriller, but Aronofsky’s involvement adds a level of promise.  The addition of Portman also seems like good news as well.  What I find disappointing about this news is that I was really looking forward to his take on RoboCop, or even his proposed film about Noah’s Ark.  Still, a mediocre sounding Aronofsky movie is better than the idea of him not working at all.

What do you think about Aronofsky helming this project, and about Portman’s casting?
