With the release of the fourth installment in the Terminator franchise, Terminator Salvation upon us, news is emerging that the films distributors may be having a change. A story in Variety reports that distributor MGM may take the opportunity to snatch up the rights for the Terminator franchise from the fourth films distributor Warner Brothers.
MGM was originally given the opportunity to produce Terminator Salvation, but had passed. Some say it was a gamble of a film, without series star Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the lead and with what was considered a shoddy script by T3 writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris (so what else is new?). However, severla factors came into play including star Christian Bale, a re-write by writers such as Dark Knight co-scribe Jonah Nolan (brother of Chris), The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, and multiple Academy Award winner Paul Haggis, and, some could now argue, direction by McG.
MGM doesn’t necessarily have much on their plate at a consistent level, and may need a big push. Terminator 5 could be just that if tracking numbers for Salvation are correct. But hey, you know what they say, as long as it ain’t Fox…
Do you think that MGM should pick up the rights for a new Terminator film? Or should they leave the franchise where it is and not take the financial risk?
