[Looking Ahead] 2010 Oscar Predictions

Last Sunday Slumdog Millionaire swept the Academy Awards concluding the culmination of 2008 cinema. 2009 film is now upon us. It’s been a bit of a mix with the horrendous Paul Blart: Mall Cop kicking off the year, but so far, it’s left us with a couple gems (Taken and Coraline 3-D). It’s not too early to take a look at the films that we will be seeing in next year’s Academy Awards. If you are looking for a more mainstream/blockbuster films, check out my 50 Must-See Movies of 2009. If you want a list of higher caliber films, here are my predictions for the major 2010 Oscars categories:

Best Picture/Director

I’ve decided to lump these two categories together since it’s too early to separate them out. Here are 10 films that I can see being in the running with some other contenders after:

Martin Scorsese – Shutter Island (a.k.a. Ashecliffe

Plot: Drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Leo DiCaprio leads an all-star cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Max von Sydow

Rob Marshall – Nine

Plot: Famous film director Guido Contini (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent and his mother. Co-starring Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren and Penelope Cruz. Inspired by Federico Fellini’s masterpiece 8 1/2.

Clint Eastwood – Untitled Nelson Mandela Project (The Human Factor)

Plot: A look at life for Nelson Mandela, focused on his time after the fall of apartheid in South Africa during his first term as president when he campaigned to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup event as an opportunity to unite his countrymen. Morgan Freeman is set to play Mandela, with Matt Damon starring alongside as South African rugby captain Francois Pienaar.

Peter Jackson – The Lovely Bones

Plot: Centers on a young girl (Atonement’s Saoirse Ronan) who has been murdered and watches over her family – and her killer – from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz play the girl’s griefstricken parents.

Terrence Malik – The Tree of Life

Plot: The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence. Starring Brad Pitt and recent Oscar-winner Sean Penn.

John Hillcoat – The Road

Plot: A post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive by any means possible. Starring Viggo Mortenson and Charlize Theron.

Plot: A band of humans are pitted in a battle against a distant planet’s indigenous population. Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington star.

Plot: A political thriller about a couple of CIA agents after WMDs. Starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear.

Ang Lee – Taking Woodstock

Plot: A man (comedian Demetri Martin) working at his parents’ motel in the Catskills inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969.

well yes and who would have ever thought that the academy would have nominated Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean ? that was the biggest surprise in Oscar history hahaah. And he should have won!!!!!!! ((damn it)) cause he's the best ever. damn it
  • Patrick C.
One other movie that seems to be overlooked that needs to be put in a screenplay dark-horse: The Hangover. The academy loves giving nominations to big time comedies in this category and with The Hangover now the highest grossing comedy ever...it seems possible. Borat scored a nomination here just a few years ago. Plus who would have ever thought that the academy would have nominated Robert Downey Jr for a movie like Tropic Thunder?
  • Patrick C.
Obviously being early September it is going to be hard to predict nominations at this time. However, for the movies that have been released so far I have to think that the 2 front runners are Julie and Julia and the Hurt Locker. I have seen District 9 as well as Star Trek and I can't see either one getting any other nominations than maybe in the technical areas. Movies I am looking forward to is Amilia, the Mandela Movie and Shutter Island.
  • Wild Child
    District 9...should be there somewhere
  • tabish
i root 4 best actor n best director too.
  • timmee1314
agree best original screenplay for sure! all other movies bow down to the prawns!
  • Viggolove
it depends on the competition as well. I don't know about Morgan Freeman in this film, i think he has a big BIG chance too, to win.

I've heard also, that Shutter Island is going to realease on February 10, what means DiCaprio is not in the race anymore, isn'the?!..^so

Viggo M. is a fave too!!

Its Johnny Depp's year this time! good luck to him, i hope he gets his nomination first of course + win!
he's awesome Actor!! hard to beat him.. his roles are quite unique.
  • mary
johnny depp should win he deserves it since Pirates 1 for captain jack
  • isador

  • timmee1314

  • Holly
Depp deserves an oscar this year. He has gotten clost in the past but he I think he has earned it on this one. Public Enemies was amazing!
  • timmee1314
......amazing....really? how low are ur standards mate?! wow this quarter pounder is the best thing ive EVER tasted!!!!!! oh wait i found a pickle! grow up! stop watching the movies for the budget and try and follow the story line!!!!!!! which would be hard for public enimies....COZ THERE IS NONE!!!!!!!
  • jesse
having just seen moon 2 hours ago, Sam Rockwell deserves Best Actor and Best Supporting actor (he portrays 2 characters). An astounding performance from one of the most underrated actors in film today. If hype did not exist and it was all about the movie I would advise other actors (Depp, the worlds most overrated actor who people still can underrated) to hold off on buying a display case just yet.

im totally up for Johnny depp winning but WHY is Michelle Pfeiffer in the "long shot" part????? she is well deserving her Oscar by now - Meryl streep is incredibly talented dont get me wrong - but she already has 2 oscars. same for Hilary swank. Michelle all the way!!!
  • Patrick
I agree with Malick being up there and "Tree of Life". I think both he and that film have a good shot at being up, despite the little attention it's receiving. I also believe Hillcoat will be a contender as well as definitely Viggo for The Road. Plus Depp should be up there for "Enemies" and I agree with The Lovely Bones. I just finished the script and it is definitely going to be a contender.
  • Patrick Clohessy

  • Jay
Don't count out Depp or Mortensen by any means... Mortensen's a much longer shot than Depp, tho. Depp I'm ready to bet has the nomination in the bag.

  • Emilius
Biutiful it's not going to be that good. Iñarritu will miss Arriaga...
  • Jonesy
What about Claire Danes for the Temple Grandin biopic? Meaty role, great/respected actress who's never been recognized by the Academy, etc....or is she too far off the mainstream radar?
  • Shatcie
"Good call on excluding “Hollywood Depp” from the possible contenders. I’ve heard it is just more of the same from some friends who have seen it."

Jack what friends are you talking about? Are you referring to your imaginary friends because I remember telling you before that they don't exist.

NO ONE COULD PREDICT ANYTHING NOW SINCE NONE OF THESE MOVIES ARE RELEASED.
  • Whyme
OH MY GOD!!!Jack Barlowe now I am sure that you are secretly in love with Johnny Depp.
I really don't care about Johnny Depp winning an Oscar but I hope he does just so you could die. And you know what, I have a strong feeling that he will get a nomination and even a win next year. It's either him or Morgan Freeman. You will see it will be between the two of them.
  • alex
oh and audrey tatou for "coco avant chanel". baity role and many think she was snubbed for "amelie".
  • alex
i think you should add renee zellweger for "my one & only" (already received quite a few raves from berlin) or "my own love song" (very baity wheelchair role) and sarah michelle gellar as a longshot for "veronika decides to die". both actresses have a better shot than weisz in my opinion, no matter how brilliant the film looks.
  • Violet
I forgot to add that Penelope Cruz's role is Nine is supporting just like all the other actresses in the movie Nine
  • Violet
I keep hearing that the studio will push Meryl Streep for supporting actress.
  • If Meryl Streep gets a nomination she has to win. She is said to be amazing in "Julie and Julia" and she surprised Nora Ephron again. I mean come on she deserves to win her third after being nominated so mamy timed without a win. If she gets nominated and doesn`t win something is seariously wrong with the academy. I mean 16 noms and no win sice 1982, thats just ridicouls!!!
  • Tuncup
Sam Rockwell deserves a nomination for Moon. For best actor AND for best supporting actor! Crazy what he managed to pull off in that.
  • Jake_barlowe
"Anyway, I defiantly think that Depp will be nominated for Public Enemies"

^^^ Shows how little you know!
  • Emer
    Meryl Streep for the win!!!
  • Yay!!! La Pfeiffer is gonna win for Cheri.
  • Ashleigh
Zooey Deschanel may have more of a chance of being nominated than you give her.

It's about time she was nominated too.
  • me
Jake Barlowe - you need serious HELP! You stalk any board or forum that mentions Depp just to make a negative comment about him.

Anyway, I defiantly think that Depp will be nominated for Public Enemies but I see the Oscar going to Morgan Freeman.
  • Jake_barlowe
Good call on excluding "Hollywood Depp" from the possible contenders. I've heard it is just more of the same from some friends who have seen it.
  • Gary

  • timmee1314
......did u watch the film or just the trailer? lol
  • Marth are serious? It was unspeakably horrible. I really couldn't believe it. I normally love Kevin James. I can't believe it got a single good review.
  • Ren
Steve, you're only defending Paul Blart because you starred in it.
  • Marth
Paul Blart: Mall Cop horrendous? Shame on you.
