Tarsem Explains War of the Gods

The visually masterful filmmaker Tarsem recently told Empire about his new film, War of the Gods:

“It’s  turning into, basically, Caravaggio meets Fight Club,” he said.  “It’s a really hardcore action film done in Renaissance painting style. I want to see how that goes; it’s turned into something really cool. This guy who I really love, who’s the only one person in it right now, is the brother in The Tudors, Henry Cavill. I’m going for a very contemporary look on top of that so I’m kind of going with, you know, Renaissance time with electricity. So it’s a bit like Baz Luhrman doing Romeo + Juliet in Mexico; it’s just talking a particular Greek tale and half contemporising it and telling it.”

Tarsem’s most recent film, The Fall, was one of the most beautiful of the year. As a result of about fourteen years of location scouting, every frame could be admired. The only thing lacking was the story. It looks his next film will more than make up for it. Here is the plot:

A purported bastard who retains an allegiance to his mother despite the fact that he longs to join the quest of a king who is battling demons in ancient Greece later embarks on a grail of discovery that has him finding he is the king’s son and also fated to become his country’s greatest hero as he leads the successful war against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.

It is scheduled to start shooting next month and be released in 2010.

Did you like The Fall? Are you excited for War of the Gods?

Tarsem is a genius and a visionary and I am yet to find somebody who can reach his artistical touch in directing a movie. I am definitely looking forward to enjoying his next work.

Can't wait for War of the Gods. The Fall was a visual masterpiece and a wonderful remake. Every frame of that movie was meticulously planned, art directed, and shot. Individually, they would stand up at Magnum in their own right. Collectively, they are simply breathtaking. As an Art Director myself I find it pretty dejecting that the movie hasn't received the recognition it deserved either by the public, the critics or indeed the awards bodies.

My whole family enjoyed "The Fall" and felt it was brilliant, and there was nothing wrong with the story, IMO. Will check out anything Tarsem does in the future.

The Fall was amazing. Artistically, amazing, and it saddens me that it didn't get any awards at least for visuals. I also love the story, and I thought it was a very interesting and perfectly constructed relationship dynamic between the two of them, Alexandria and Roy. It's very interesting psychologically and philosophically.

I've not yet seen the Cell, but I want to for visuals if nothing else, I'm definately excited for this one!!!!

There was absolutely nothing lacking in The Fall's story. All this talk about some weak story is people injecting what they wanted it to be into the picture instead of seeing it for what it was, which was a simple, beautiful, masterfully told story.
  • I just saw "The Fall" two weeks ago on BD and was awesome. I don't like "The Cell" much, but "The Fall" definitely has me excited to see what Tarsem does next. How doesn "The Fall" not get a best cinematography or costume nomination?
